Elderly British Couple Released by Taliban Returns to UK After Nearly Eight Months

An elderly British couple, Peter Reynolds, 80, and his wife Barbie Reynolds, 76, who were held in detention by Afghanistan’s Taliban for almost eight months, have finally returned safely to the United Kingdom. The couple arrived on Saturday at London’s Heathrow Airport after spending a night in Doha, Qatar, undergoing medical checks following their release.

The couple was arrested in February 2025 while returning to their home in Bamiyan province of central Afghanistan. They were initially held in a maximum security prison, later moved to underground cells without daylight, and subsequently transferred to the Taliban intelligence services in Kabul, according to United Nations experts.

Peter and Barbie Reynolds married in Kabul in 1970 and have lived in Afghanistan for nearly two decades. They ran educational and training programs aimed at women and children and had also acquired Afghan citizenship. Despite strong dissuasion from the British embassy, the couple chose to remain in Afghanistan after the Taliban regained power in 2021.

Their detention raised international concern, with UN human rights experts warning as early as July that their rapidly declining health put them at risk of irreversible harm or even death. Multiple pleas from their family for their release cited their deteriorating condition, prompting urgent diplomatic efforts.

The Qatari government played a crucial role in negotiating their freedom and facilitating their transfer to Doha for medical care before their journey to the UK. Upon arrival in Doha, they were warmly embraced by family members, including their daughter Sarah Entwistle, who expressed overwhelming gratitude and relief.

The Taliban’s foreign ministry later stated that the couple had violated Afghan laws but were released following judicial processes. The reasons for their arrest remain undisclosed.

In a statement, the Reynolds’ four children expressed immense joy and gratitude, emphasizing the power of diplomacy, empathy, and international cooperation in securing their parents’ release. They also highlighted the long road to recovery ahead as their parents regain their health and reunite with family.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed the news, describing the release as a huge relief for the family and commending Qatar’s role in the negotiations.

The British government continues to advise against travel to Afghanistan, citing limited consular support and security risks amid the Taliban’s strict regime and ongoing human rights concerns.
