In the early hours of Sunday, August 10, 2025, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) conducted a surprise raid at the Green Legacy Hotel, located within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library premises in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The raid targeted a pool party where several youths suspected of involvement in internet fraud were arrested.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as the guests fled in panic amid the sound of gunshots, captured in a viral video circulating online. The EFCC reportedly seized more than 20 luxury cars and other valuable items during the operation, which was carried out by personnel from the Lagos Directorate.
This action is part of an intensified crackdown on cybercrime activities in Ogun State, coming just five days after the Ibadan Zonal Directorate of the EFCC apprehended 55 suspectsโincluding an individual found with two locally-made pistolsโduring a raid at K-Hotel in Itori, Ewekoro area of the state.
An eyewitness shared on social media how they had left late at night for the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, found the crowd overwhelming, and shortly after leaving, learned about the EFCC raid. The Managing Director of OOPL Ventures, Vitalis Ortese, confirmed the raid but withheld further details, stating investigations are ongoing.
EFCC spokespeople from both the Lagos zonal command and the national office have yet to release an official statement but acknowledged the incident and promised updates.
This operation highlights the EFCCโs ongoing commitment to combating internet fraud and related financial crimes within Nigeria, particularly in hotspot locations like hospitality venues in Ogun State.
