The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has stepped up its clampdown on high-profile financial malfeasance, dragging two suspects, Ali Bala (also known as Barrister Ahmed) and Yusuf Umar Anka, before the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja.
The defendants were arraigned before Justice Olukayode Ogunjobi on a 10-count charge that spans money laundering, outright stealing, and the unlawful retention of stolen property. According to the anti-graft agency’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 1, the duo masterminded complex financial transactions in 2025 designed to conceal the illicit origins of £110,000 alongside a separate trail of funds scaling up to ₦500 million.
Prosecutors noted that the charges contravene crucial sections of the nation’s anti-fraud framework, notably Section 7(1)(b)(i) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006.
During the court proceedings, both defendants entered a plea of “not guilty” to all counts brought against them. Following their plea, the prosecution counsel, H.U. Kofarnaisa, pressed the court for a formal trial date and urged that the defendants be remanded to a correctional facility.

Conversely, the defense counsel notified the court of an existing bail application awaiting review.
Justice Ogunjobi adjourned the proceedings to September 8, 2026, to properly hear and consider the bail application. In the interim, the court ordered that Bala and Anka be remanded in EFCC custody pending the determination of their bail.
