EFCC Defends Freezing of Osun Accounts Over N11bn Fraud Probe

​The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has broken its silence regarding the placement of a Post-No-Debit (PND) restriction on the bank accounts of the Osun State Government, maintaining that the action was necessitated by a high-stakes investigation into an alleged N11 billion financial misappropriation.

​Addressing the timing of the freeze—which comes barely ten days before the state’s highly anticipated August 15 governorship election—the anti-graft agency stated that the decision was purely a preventive safeguard against the looting of public resources rather than a politically motivated move.

​According to the Commission, comprehensive investigations into the administration’s handling of the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) funds, Ecology Funds, and special Intervention Funds have been ongoing since March 2026. Key state functionaries, including the State Accountant-General, have previously been grilled by investigators over the transactions.

​Suspicious Fund Movements Triggered Action

​Explaining why the probe escalated into an outright freeze, the EFCC disclosed that covert monitoring detected a sudden, suspicious wave of capital flight from government coffers.

​”These ongoing investigations… would not have warranted any placement of a Post-No-Debit order on its account but for the precipitate and unwarranted movement of funds from the accounts to different suspicious accounts since August 2, 2026,” the Commission noted, adding that massive sums were being funneled into various corporate entities.

​Confronted with what it described as the active pillaging of state resources, the anti-corruption body asserted that it could not fold its arms or hide behind the excuse of an impending election.

​The EFCC emphasized that its statutory mandate to protect public assets overrides political timelines. Furthermore, the agency revealed that Osun is not an isolated case, noting that several other state governments currently remain under its investigative radar to ensure accountability and fiscal probity.

​Urging the public to dismiss narratives aimed at demonizing its operations, the Commission reiterated its non-partisan stance, declaring that safeguarding the collective wealth of Nigerians remains its primary institutional commitment.
