Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has called on universities to become drivers of homegrown innovation and technology, highlighting the importance of modernising education to meet the needs of today’s digital era.

Speaking at the University of Port Harcourt’s 35th convocation and 50th anniversary lecture on Friday, Governor Diri challenged policymakers and education managers across Nigeria to update curricula at every level, ensuring that students can thrive amid the realities of the digital age.

He specifically urged universities to lead research that strengthens and commercialises made-in-Nigeria products, warning against undervaluing vocational skills. “We must abandon a national arrogance, one that derides artisans, sneers at traders, and views vocational skills as consolation prizes for those who could not succeed. This mindset is precisely why we find ourselves importing toothpicks and sharpeners,” Diri stated.
The governor, who is an alumnus of the University of Port Harcourt, pledged to initiate a staff housing project for the university before the end of his tenure. He also cited the Bayelsa Promoting Reform to Improve and Modernise Education (BayelsaPRIME) policy and the establishment of an ICT hub in Yenagoa as examples of his commitment to fostering digital literacy and access to technology.

Diri advocated for increased funding for educational institutions from both the government and private sector partners, underscoring the need for purposeful impact over mere prestige.
During the event, Vice Chancellor Prof. Owunari Georgewill congratulated 861 graduating students and announced that Diri was among 50 distinguished alumni honoured as part of the institution’s golden jubilee celebrations. The governor received the Distinguished Alumnus Award and a Lifetime Achievement in Education Partnership Award in recognition of his contributions to education and development of his alma mater.

Governor Diri was accompanied by his wife, Justice Patience Diri, Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly Abraham Ingobere, other lawmakers, and key state officials.
