The recent political developments in Bayelsa State have sparked intense debate within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Nigeria’s political landscape at large. Former Governor of Bayelsa State and current Senator representing Bayelsa West, Seriake Dickson, has publicly reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP, distancing himself from the defectors including Governor Douye Diri, who recently left PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Dickson’s firm stance expresses his deep-rooted conviction in sustaining a strong opposition party in Nigeria’s democracy. Despite the defection of his hand-picked successor, Governor Diri, and a significant number of Bayelsa State Assembly members to APC, Dickson remains steadfast. He described the mass defection as a loss for the PDP in the region but insisted that his principles of loyalty, consistency, and ideological commitment bind him to the PDP.
He lamented the ease with which politicians abandon parties during internal struggles, warning that such defections erode the foundation of political institutions and weaken democracy. Dickson also called for introspection, patience, and dialogue within PDP rather than divisions and defections. He warned that without a robust opposition like the PDP, democracy risks sliding into dictatorship and totalitarianism.
According to Dickson, Nigeria’s political system thrives on diversity of opinions and competition among parties. He urged members to resist personal interests in favor of collective party ideals and emphasized the importance of internal party reform and rebuilding trust. His powerful message is that if the PDP cannot be saved, any collective decision made should not include joining the ruling APC, as a democracy without opposition ceases to be a democracy .
