Delta Residents Cry Out Over Flooded Road, Calls for Government Intervention

Residents of Bonsack/Poultry area in Asaba, Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State, have appealed to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the local council chairman, Mr. Obi Ezenyeli, for immediate intervention as floods continue to ravage their only accessible road.

Speaking on behalf of the residents, Mrs. Blessing Olisa lamented the deteriorating state of the road, stressing that the destructive effects of the floods that peak during the rainy season, from July through October.

“She said, “Each time it rains, we are forced to park our vehicles far away and trek through flooded areas to reach our homes. The situation is unbearable,” she explained.To demonstrate the depth of the flood, Mrs. Olisa waded through a deeply submerged section of the road.

She urged the government to construct the road to prevent the recurring devastation. Say,img, “Until the road is fixed, we will continue to suffer. It’s a yearly nightmare,” she said.

Mrs. Olisa further decried the actions of some landlords in the area, accusing them of making the situation worse by piling sand in front of their properties, obstructing water flow. “One of our neighbours recently packed sand by the roadside, making it impossible for water to flow. When my husband, Dr. Olisa, asked him to remove it, he was attacked and injured,” she revealed.

According to Mrs. Olisa, Governor Oborevwori has a reputation for being responsive and she believes he would act swiftly once the issue is brought to his attention.

Engineer Ozonnachi Mishack, another resident, shared his own troubling encounter, stating that he was brutally attacked by his neighbour’s boys for daring to clear sand that was blocking the road.

“They beat me and broke my right knee just because I removed the sand blocking the road. My only crime was trying to help ease movement and prevent criminals from using the blockage to scale fences and rob us,” Mishack explained, calling on the government to intervene urgently.

Mr. Ikechukwu Anozie, another resident, said the community had made several complaints to previous administrations, but no action was taken.

He expressed hope that Governor Oborevwori’s administration would finally address the longstanding issue.

“We’ve been suffering in silence for years, but this government seems different. We hope they will listen and help us,” Anozie said.

The Oza Udubom Community, popularly known as the Poultry Area, has been peaceful, according to residents, but the continuous flooding and unchecked actions of a few individuals have made life unbearable. Residents are now pleading for swift government intervention to restore their road and peace of mind.
