The residents of the Issele-Uku community in Aniocha North Local Government Area, Delta State, have resorted to spiritual measures, laying curses on kidnappers and other criminals terrorising the area.

Reports indicate a rise in kidnappings and killings in Issele-Uku and its environs during the first quarter of 2025.
Following a meeting at the inner chamber of the palace with chiefs, the spiritual head (Eze-Dibie), titled elders, and the traditional ruler of Issele-Uku kingdom, HRM Obi Nduka, who appeared at the palace’s front view (Ishu Uge), expressed deep concern over the recent wave of insecurity that has transformed the once peaceful community into a fearful one.
He stated, “The Ine Ubi ceremony has become necessary and is almost our last resort to cleanse the land spiritually. This method, adopted by our forefathers, was used to curb evil whenever it became unbearable.
“Issele-Uku has always been known as a welcoming and hospitable community. We have never experienced such rampant criminal activity where residents are abducted regularly.
“Traditionally, we do not resort to spiritual cleansing involving curses, but the situation has escalated to a point where decisive action is needed to sanitise our community.
“We are working closely with government and security agencies to find solutions, but everyone also has a role to play as collective efforts continue to address this menace.
“Government has not failed us entirely, as insecurity is a nationwide issue. However, I urge authorities to intensify their efforts because ensuring the security and welfare of citizens is the government’s primary constitutional duty.
“As custodians of our traditions and culture, we have pronounced curses on those orchestrating and aiding these evils. We refuse to stand by while criminals operate with impunity. Anyone involved should be prepared to face the consequences of their actions.”
The nine villages of the community held a procession that ended at the palace, carrying palm sticks, Bibles, and chaplets, as they laid curses on kidnappers, armed robbers, charm planters, and other evildoers undermining the peace of the kingdom
