Growing up in a cramped Nigerian compound where even impoverished neighbors singled his family out as destitute, David Etor learned early what absolute scarcity meant. Sharing a single kitchen, toilet, and bathroom with multiple families, his household faced days where food was an impossible luxury. To shield her children from the biting shame of hunger, Etor’s mother would routinely fill a pot with water, place it on the fire, and lift the lid to stir it periodically—putting on an elaborate theatrical performance for the surrounding rooms to mimic the preparation of a hearty meal.

”I didn’t see a way out,” Etor recalls of those formative years. Told bluntly as a child that “nothing good was supposed to come out of me,” he did not learn how to read and write until he was 12 years old.

Yet, today, the 43-year-old stands far removed from those bleak beginnings. As a lecturer in the School of Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bristol, Etor reflects on an unlikely trajectory that carried him from the margins of West Africa to the upper echelons of British academia.

The turning point in his life arrived during national service in Nigeria. Observing that local communities frequently suffered from severe food poisoning caused by traditional open-field drying methods of food preservation, Etor applied his innate technical curiosity to invent a functioning “solar oven.” The successful design caught the attention of the state government, earning him an official award and a foundational job that altered his path.

That initial breakthrough unlocked academic doors he was once told would forever remain bolted. He secured a scholarship to study electrical power at Newcastle University, followed by a PhD at Durham University, eventually leading to his current post in Bristol.

Sir Steve Webb, a former government minister who befriended Etor through a local church community, describes his accomplishments as extraordinary. “David’s message is very much that people shouldn’t be defined by their upbringing or their background,” Webb noted. “They shouldn’t be written off.”

For Etor, the journey still feels surreal. Recalling the stark contrast between his childhood reality and walking the halls of a prestigious British university, he admits to pinching himself on his commute—living proof of a future that, by all accounts, was never supposed to happen.
