Deep-Target Drone Strike Kills 13 in Central Russia

​NIZHNEKAMSK — A massive wave of long-range Ukrainian drones struck a strategic petroleum and petrochemical hub deep inside central Russia early Monday, killing 13 people—including a child—and injuring upwards of 75 others.

​The pre-dawn assault on Nizhnekamsk, located in Russia’s Tatarstan region roughly 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) east of the Ukrainian border, marks one of the deadliest single incidents on Russian soil since the war began. Regional officials confirmed that a worker hostel was directly hit, accounting for nine of the fatalities, which included foreign nationals from Central Asia alongside local residents.

​Ukraine’s General Staff openly claimed responsibility for the operation, stating that the military successfully targeted the heavily fortified Taneco oil refinery complex as part of an escalating campaign to cripple Russia’s war economy. Social media footage verified by open-source analysts showed towering plumes of black smoke and massive secondary flames enveloping the sprawling industrial site, which houses multiple refineries and chemical production lines.

​The strike underscores a dramatic shift in Kyiv’s military strategy. Over the summer, persistent long-range drone incursions have disrupted more than 30 percent of Russia’s total oil-refining capacity, triggering severe domestic fuel shortages and constricting state revenues.

​Speaking on the strategy, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy defended the deep-territory strikes as a necessary counter-offensive against relentless Russian bombardment of Ukrainian population centers.

​”We do deliver entirely justified responses, and every Russian strike will be met with our response,” Zelenskyy said, emphasizing that the economic and physical consequences of the conflict are increasingly hitting home inside Russia.

​In response to the multi-pronged aerial barrage—which Moscow claimed involved hundreds of intercepted drones nationwide—Tatarstan authorities declared a regional day of mourning. Meanwhile, parallel strikes were reported further east in Western Siberia’s Tyumen region, where Ukrainian forces claimed hits on critical petrochemical infrastructure associated with aviation and rocket fuel components.
