The conversation around love, money and modern relationships took a sharper turn this weekend as media personality Toke Makinwa issued a bold warning: dating outside your financial class is a fast track to emotional strain, unmet expectations and unnecessary pressure.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Makinwa made the remarks during her appearance on the ‘MENtality’ podcast hosted by Ebuka Obi‑Uchendu, where she dissected the financial mismatch that often destabilises relationships.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Makinwa argued that partners who earn within similar income brackets tend to show greater understanding, empathy and support. According to her, “I am a big believer in dating within your wage and within your class. That way, there will not be stories that touch. You will have a good girl at home, a girl who will even make dinner with her own money when you don’t have. Yet, some men will still want to cheat on her.”
She extended the conversation to loyalty and success, noting that many men abandon the women who stood by them before fame, only to later complain that women are materialistic. Makinwa insisted that money does not transform people but reveals their true nature. In her words, “Money doesn’t change people; it just reveals who they are.”
The actress warned that this reality is why many women are afraid of building with men who have not yet achieved financial stability. She explained that some men drastically change once they “blow,” often treating the women who sacrificed for them with disregard. “Heaven forbid you end up with a guy who hasn’t blown. The day he blows, that is when you will know his true personality. And that scares women. So many men are treating women who sacrificed everything for them badly,” she added.
Her comments have reignited conversations about financial compatibility, emotional maturity and the hidden pressures that shape modern relationships. As the debate spreads across social media, one thing is clear: Makinwa’s message has struck a nerve, challenging both men and women to rethink how money, loyalty and personal values intersect in love, ValidViewNetwork reports.
