Daniel Ortega Declares End to Future Elections in Nicaragua

​Marking the 47th anniversary of the 1979 Sandinista revolution, 80-year-old authoritarian President Daniel Ortega announced that Nicaragua will no longer hold elections. Speaking to supporters in his first public appearance in two months, Ortega declared that the move is designed to permanently prevent the opposition from taking power.

​”There won’t be any more elections here for them to try to seize the government and seize power,” Ortega stated. He added that his administration will collaborate with the ruling-party-controlled National Assembly to pass new legislation aimed at “building a wall” against political rivals.

​Deepening Authoritarian Control

​The announcement formalizes an already entrenched political reality in the Central American nation. Following a brutal crackdown on nationwide anti-government protests in 2018—which left over 300 dead—the regime systematically dismantled electoral competition. The 2021 general election saw widespread condemnation after Ortega detained key opposition candidates and criminalized dissent.

​Last year, sweeping constitutional reforms extended presidential terms to six years and formally elevated his wife, Rosario Murillo, to the position of “co-president”. Together, the couple exerts near-total control over the judiciary, armed forces, and state institutions, drawing severe human rights violations accusations from the United Nations Human Rights Council.

​Regional Backlash and “Fear” Disguised as Force

​International analysts and exiled opposition leaders quickly condemned the declaration. Tiziano Breda, a senior Latin America analyst at the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data project, noted that the decision seals Nicaragua’s transformation into a “full-fledged family dictatorship”. Breda suggested the move stems from deep-seated vulnerability, noting that the regime is “afraid that the slightest political opening could create the conditions for dissent to manifest”.

​Felix Maradiaga, a former political prisoner and exiled presidential hopeful, echoed those sentiments, characterizing Ortega’s decree as “a confession of fear” rather than a true show of strength.
