
Dame Patricia Routledge, renowned for her iconic role as Hyacinth Bucket in the BBC sitcom “Keeping Up Appearances,” was laid to rest today in a heartfelt funeral service at Chichester Cathedral, West Sussex. The beloved actor passed away peacefully in her sleep on 3 October at age 96, surrounded by love. Her career spanned over six decades, encompassing acclaimed work in theatre, comedy, and musical drama.

Hundreds gathered—friends, fans, and local residents—to pay tribute to a woman whose versatility and generosity left a lasting mark. Attendees of the service were invited to contribute to The Patricia Routledge Foundation, created by Dame Patricia in 1999, which supports charitable causes including education, the arts, and overseas aid. According to Reverend Nicholas Frayling, Routledge donated over £1 million during her lifetime to help young people launching careers in music and theatre, and many will continue to benefit from her foundation.
The funeral service, planned by Routledge herself years ago, celebrated her rich life and legacy with warmth and affection. Close friend Canon David Nason recalled reading fan letters aloud to her in later years, highlighting how her work, especially on “Keeping Up Appearances,” brought joy and comfort to many, including those suffering severe illnesses.

Patricia Routledge’s accolades include a 1968 Tony Award for “Darling of the Day” and a 1988 Olivier Award for “Candide.” Her brilliant embodiment of Hyacinth Bucket, imbued with impeccable comic timing and subtle warmth, made her a comedy legend and a beloved figure in British entertainment. The BBC’s director of comedy, Jon Petrie, praised her performance as one of the most iconic in British comedy history.
Her lasting impact spans theatre and television, marked by a dedication to craft and heartfelt connection with audiences worldwide. Dame Patricia Routledge’s legacy of laughter, generosity, and artistry will be cherished for generations.
