BEIJING, CHINA — In a move aimed at consolidating economic and diplomatic ties between Abuja and Beijing, a former Chief of Army Staff and one-time Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd), has officially assumed duty as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China.
The retired general took charge of the Nigerian Mission in Beijing on Thursday, May 28, 2026, immediately following his arrival. Embassy officials received the new Head of Mission, who wasted no time in diving into high-level diplomatic engagements. His swift transition from arrival to active governance underlines the strategic priority Nigeria places on its long-standing alliance with China.
A Strategic Milestone in Bilateral Relations
Ambassador Dambazau’s deployment comes on the heels of his official posting by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in March 2026, following a rigorous Senate screening and confirmation process that concluded in December 2025.
Diplomatic observers expect Dambazau to bring his vast experience in military command, national security, and public administration to bear on his new assignment. Prior to departing Abuja for Beijing, the Ambassador-Designate emphasized that his primary goals would focus on the welfare of the massive Nigerian diaspora community in China—predominantly traders and investors—while simultaneously deepening trade, infrastructure development, healthcare, and agricultural cooperation.

Speaking during a pre-deployment consultation with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Dambazau highlighted that Nigeria-China relations, which date back to 1971, have entered a pivotal phase following President Tinubu’s 2024 state visit to Beijing.
”Nigeria and China have shared a deep, mutually beneficial relationship over the decades. Moving forward, we intend to leverage China’s technological and strategic expertise to address emerging security challenges back home, while fully upholding the One-China Policy and advocating for our people abroad,” Dambazau noted.
High Expectations for Economic and Security Gains
The timing of Dambazau’s resumption is critical. He steps into his role as Nigeria positions itself to maximize funding and technical partnerships under the Renewed Hope Agenda. Given his background as a criminology professor and security expert, industry analysts predict a marked increase in defense diplomacy and technological transfers between the two allied nations.
With the mission under his stewardship, the Nigerian diplomatic corps in Beijing is expected to drive a results-oriented policy framework. Diplomatic circles are highly optimistic that his tenure will herald a new chapter of impactful leadership, revitalized trade agreements, and reinforced safety architectures for Nigerians living and doing business across Chinese provinces.
