The fast-evolving debate over the burial traditions of Yoruba monarchs is set to take centre stage at the 34th edition of the globally followed Boiling Point Arena on Sunday, August 10, 2025, starting at 8:00 PM (WAT).
The two-hour live discourse will feature an engaging intellectual clash between two respected figures from different cultural and religious spheres: Prof. Wande Abimbola, renowned Ifa priest, scholar, and former Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, and Pastor Femi Emmanuel, General Overseer of Living Spring Church International and former Deputy Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly.
Prof Abimbola holds the traditional title of Awise Gbogbo Agbaye, a title conferred on hm by the then Ọọni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade in 1981 on the recommendation of a conclave of West African Babalawos.
For his part, Pastor Emmanuel is the General Overseer of Living Spring Church International, a sprawling church with branches all over the country and overseas. He recently clocked 70.
The theme, “Secrecy Vs Transparency: The Great Battle Over Yoruba Monarchs’ Burial Traditions and the Future of Yoruba Culture,” seeks to examine whether the recent trend of burying kings according to their personal religious beliefs is a natural evolution of tradition or an erosion of deeply rooted cultural heritage.
Both Prof Wande Abimbola and Pastor Femi Emmanuel are to dissect the dynamism of tradition and culture as well as the imperative of preservation of cultural ethos and practices which define the Yoruba people.
The duo will pointedly situate the new trend of burying monarchs based on their spiritual leanings while alive as to whether it’s an evolution of tradition or outright desecration of culture.
The Discussants are to also interrogate all the issues involved within the context of tradition, Law, government influence and religion, ValidViewNetwork reports.
Keynote remarks will be delivered by Oba Prof. Saka Matemilola, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, who will also chair the session. Discussions will cover the intersections of tradition, religion, law, and government influence in shaping the future of Yoruba culture.
Hosted by media professional and PR strategist Dr. Ayo Arowojolu, Boiling Point Arena is transmitted live via Zoom and broadcast on multiple platforms including WASH 94.9FM, Sweet 107.1FM, Roots 97.1FM, Erimbe 94.7FM, Women Radio 91.7FM, Kruzz 92.9FM, and NSTV on GoTV Channel 316.
