The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, has raised alarm over a drastic increase in his electricity bill, which surged from N2.7 million in March to an astonishing N29 million in April. He made this revelation during a meeting on Monday at Victoria Island, attended by representatives from the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and the Lagos State Government.
Hamzat highlighted the widespread issue of estimated billing, which he described as a major challenge affecting many residents. “People trying to survive depend on power, but they don’t have it. There are billing challenges. I’m a prime example. Last month, my bill was N2.7 million; this month, Eko DisCo sent a bill of N29 million. I even bought a meter to avoid estimated billing, but converting it has been problematic,” he said.
He also shared a disturbing case from Coker Aguda, Surulere, where a man was billed N2.8 million for electricity—more than his annual rent of N2 million. “Our people are suffering because of estimated billing,” Hamzat lamented.
This issue comes amid Lagos State’s ongoing efforts to improve power supply through renewable energy initiatives and regulatory reforms aimed at eliminating estimated billing and ensuring reliable electricity for residents and businesses.
