A serene family outing at Long Point on Martha’s Vineyard transformed into an unspeakable tragedy on Friday, July 31, when a father gave his life to protect his children and fellow swimmers from a treacherous riptide.
Kevin Foster, an Arkansas native and pillar of the Cambridge community, dove into the turbulent Atlantic waters just before 4:00 p.m. to rescue his teenage sons, Kenneth and Kaden, alongside other distressed beachgoers. While the rescue efforts successfully saved multiple lives—including his sons—Kevin was swept under and did not survive.
A Desperate Battle Against the Current
Emergency services, including the West Tisbury Police, West Tisbury Fire Rescue, and Tri-Town Medical Staff, rushed to the private stretch of coastline following a 3:47 p.m. distress call. Though the remote location lacked on-duty lifeguards, three off-duty lifeguards stationed five miles away heard the call for help and sprinted into the raging surf.
Crews successfully pulled four individuals to safety. Kevin was swiftly transported to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, where he tragically passed away.
Remembered for a Lifetime of Service
Family, friends, and local leaders are remembering Kevin not just for his heroic final act, but for a lifetime defined by unwavering dedication to others, deep faith, and profound community involvement.
Professionally a successful marketing executive, Kevin also dedicated his time to civic duty, notably serving on the Cambridge Community Preservation Act committee to champion affordable housing and strengthen local neighborhoods.

His wife, Nadia Foster, shared an emotional tribute on a memorial page:
”I share that we have lost Kevin A. Foster: beloved father, husband, son, and friend. He passed away on July 31st, swimming in the waters off of Martha’s Vineyard, a place he loved, among people he loved, and who loved him… This loss is unimaginable, and our grief is immense.”
State Representative Marjorie Decker, a lifelong friend of Nadia’s who introduced the couple, reflected on Kevin’s immense impact:
”Kevin became family from the moment he entered our lives. He was like a brother to me, an uncle to my children, another son to my mother, and above all, an extraordinary husband, devoted father, and cherished friend.”
Community Rallies in Support
In the wake of the tragedy, the Foster family expressed profound gratitude for the outpouring of compassion from first responders, beachgoers, and neighbors.
”We offer a very special thank you to the first responders on Martha’s Vineyard who courageously gave of themselves to support our family and other distressed swimmers that day,” the family stated. “We are also grateful to the beachgoers who were there with us, whose courage, compassion, and support will never be forgotten.”
Kevin Foster was laid to rest in a private service on Tuesday, August 11, having, in the words of his funeral directors, “completed his earthly assignment.”

To honor his legacy and secure the futures of his surviving sons, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to support Kenneth and Kaden’s education. The fund has already drawn an overwhelming response from the community, raising over $281,000 as supporters rally around a family that spent years opening their hearts and home to others.
