Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Judiciary to the fair, impartial and timely administration of justice as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
The CJN made the statement in her Independence Day goodwill message, in which she called on Nigerians to strengthen the country’s institutions, uphold the rule of law and promote national unity.
She said the anniversary provided an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s journey, the challenges it has faced and the responsibilities that remain.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the CJN placed the quality and credibility of institutions at the centre of her Independence Day message, alongside fairness in the administration of law and public trust.
‘THE JUDICIARY REMAINS COMMITTED’
Kekere-Ekun reaffirmed the constitutional responsibilities of the Judiciary as an important pillar of Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.
“The Judiciary remains committed to the fair, impartial and timely administration of justice, integrity, independence and humanity,” she said.
The CJN said the strength of a nation should not be measured solely by economic or material progress. She identified the quality of its institutions, fairness in the administration of laws and public confidence in those institutions as important measures of national development.
CALL FOR TOLERANCE AND UNITY
The Chief Justice also urged Nigerians to approach their differences with understanding and tolerance.
She said Nigeria’s diversity should, when guided by mutual respect and a shared national purpose, become a source of strength rather than division.
Kekere-Ekun also called on Nigerians to remember and honour citizens whose sacrifices in different areas of national service have contributed to preserving the country’s freedom and sustaining democracy.
She expressed the hope that Nigeria would continue to prosper and that the aspirations of its citizens would find greater fulfilment.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the CJN’s message places the Judiciary’s constitutional role within the wider responsibility of strengthening democratic institutions and preserving public confidence in the rule of law.
Her statement comes as Nigeria begins its 67th year as an independent nation and continues to grapple with questions around institutional trust, justice, security and democratic governance.
