Christa Pike: Tennessee Prepares First Female Execution in More Than 200 Years

ValidViewNetwork reports that Tennessee is scheduled to execute Christa Pike, who was convicted over the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer.

Pike was 18 years old when Slemmer was killed.

According to court records and current reporting, Pike, her boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp, and another accomplice, Shadolla Peterson, lured Slemmer to a wooded area in Knoxville.

Slemmer was attacked and killed. Pike was subsequently convicted and sentenced to death. Shipp received a life sentence with the possibility of parole, while Peterson received a substantially different and lesser sentence.

The different sentences have remained part of the legal and public discussion surrounding the case.

WHY PIKE REMAINED ON DEATH ROW FOR DECADES

Pike has spent roughly three decades under a death sentence. Her lawyers have repeatedly challenged the sentence and raised arguments concerning her age at the time of the crime, her childhood trauma and mental-health history.

The defence has argued that those circumstances should be taken into account in deciding whether the death sentence should be carried out.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights has also issued recommendations relating to Pike’s case, including a call for review and commutation of her sentence.

TENNESSEE SETS THE EXECUTION DATE

The Tennessee Supreme Court set September 30, 2026 as Pike’s execution date.

The Tennessee Department of Correction subsequently confirmed that the execution was scheduled for 10 a.m. Central Daylight Time on September 30 at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville.

Pike is the only woman currently on Tennessee’s death row.I If the execution proceeds, she would become the first woman executed by Tennessee in more than 200 years.

Her lawyers challenged aspects of Tennessee’s execution procedures and raised constitutional arguments.

They also relied on arguments concerning Pike’s circumstances at the time of the 1995 crime.

The Supreme Court subsequently rejected the application for a stay and denied the petition.

The official court record states: “Application … for a stay of execution … is denied. The petition for a writ of certiorari is denied.”

That decision removed the final major federal judicial barrier to the scheduled execution, although executive or other legal intervention could theoretically still affect the process.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF HER AGE

One of the unusual aspects of the case is Pike’s age when the crime occurred. She was 18.

Reuters reported that, if executed, she would be the only person executed in modern Tennessee for a crime committed at that age.

Her lawyers have argued that the passage of time and evidence concerning her background should be considered before the state carries out the sentence.

Opposing views have focused on the seriousness of Slemmer’s murder and the jury’s original decision to impose the death penalty.
