A tragic fire incident in the Choba area of Rivers State on July 5, 2025, has left the community in shock after a man, Sunny Amadi, succumbed to severe burns following a violent altercation with his estranged lover, 25-year-old Cynthia Chukwunda.
According to reports from local authorities and eyewitnesses, Cynthia, who is eight months pregnant, and Sunny had previously ended their relationship, described as tumultuous with episodes of frequent quarrels. On the day of the incident, Cynthia claimed she returned home to find Sunny in her room without invitation. A heated confrontation ensued regarding previous issues in their relationship.
Accounts from the scene indicate that Sunny brought a plastic bottle reportedly containing petrol and had lit a candle in Cynthia’s room. During the dispute, the bottle came into dangerous proximity with the flame, causing a sudden fire outbreak. Both individuals suffered burns in the ensuing blaze. While Cynthia managed to escape and sought help, Sunny was severely injured and died at the hospital from his injuries a short time later.
While some reports suggested that Cynthia intentionally set Sunny ablaze, she emphatically denied these allegations from her hospital bed, insisting the fire was accidental and that she had no intent to harm him. Cynthia added that she had repeatedly rejected Sunny’s attempts to rekindle their relationship, making clear she did not wish to continue any association with him.
The Rivers State Police Command has since confirmed it is investigating the circumstances of the incident. Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko explained that, due to Cynthia’s critical medical condition, she has not yet given a full statement, but authorities are hopeful that a clearer picture will emerge as she recovers. Meanwhile, officers have stated that Cynthia is under close observation as part of the ongoing inquiry and the investigation remains active as police attempt to unravel the full chain of events.
In a twist, the University of Port Harcourt has released a statement refuting claims that Cynthia Chukwunda is a current student, urging the public not to spread misinformation and to allow law enforcement to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation.
The Choba fire tragedy has sparked renewed conversations around intimate partner violence, mental health, and the need for early intervention. The police have appealed for calm and patience from the public, reassuring that justice will be diligently pursued as the case develops.
