The Kogi State Police have confirmed the death of a 47-year-old Chinese national, Mr. Luo Zhi Mao, who worked as a supervisor at BN Ceramics in Ajaokuta. Mr. Luo collapsed while on duty in the Press Department of the factory on the evening of Saturday, August 2, around 6:30 p.m.
He was promptly taken to Covenant Hospital in Ajaokuta and subsequently referred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Lokoja. However, due to an ongoing strike by doctors and nurses at FMC, he was transferred to Shifaah Hospital, also located in Lokoja. Unfortunately, Mr. Luo passed away three days later on Tuesday, August 5, at about 9:30 p.m. at Shifaah Hospital.
His body has been moved to the Kogi State Specialist Hospital Mortuary where an autopsy is underway to determine the precise cause of death. The police have stated that there is currently no suspicion of foul play surrounding the incident, though investigations remain open.
This incident highlights ongoing challenges in healthcare accessibility linked to industrial actions by medical staff, which impacted the immediate medical care Mr. Luo received after his collapse.
BN Ceramics, where Mr. Luo was employed, has recently been in the news for legal and financial controversies involving Chinese expatriates and management disputes, but there is no indication these are related to his death.
As the investigation continues, authorities are calling for patience and cooperation from all parties to clarify the circumstances leading to this unfortunate event.
