CAPE TOWN — A wave of shock has gripped the beachfront community of Table View after a 33-year-old man was brutally executed inside a popular local restaurant during a brazen, broad-daylight assassination.
The chilling incident unfolded on Monday afternoon at the bustling News Cafe, located along the prominent Marine Circle strip, leaving local residents and regular patrons deeply shaken by the audacity of the killers.
The Execution
According to eyewitness accounts and law enforcement officials, the victim—described as a frequent regular at the establishment—was sitting inside the restaurant at approximately 2:00 PM when two unidentified men suddenly stormed the venue.
Without warning, the gunmen singled out the victim and opened fire at close range, pumping six bullets into him.
“Two guys went in and shot the guy,” a traumatized bystander recalled. “He shot him. Six bullets. They took his phone and laptop.”
After ensuring the target was neutralized, the attackers snatched the victim’s electronic devices and fled the scene in a waiting getaway vehicle.
Emergency Response
Western Cape police and emergency medical services rushed to the scene following frantic calls from restaurant staff and terrified onlookers. Paramedics discovered the 33-year-old victim slumped inside the establishment suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite resuscitation efforts, he was declared dead at the scene.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that Table View police have registered a formal murder case. Remarkably, despite the high volume of foot traffic and the presence of staff and other patrons inside the restaurant during the lunchtime rush, no bystanders were physically harmed in the melee.
Motive Under Investigation
While the theft of the laptop and phone initially introduced a robbery element, the targeted precision of the attack has led detectives to strongly suspect a planned hit. The stolen electronics are believed to have been targeted specifically for the data they contained, or as an afterthought to mask a deeper motive.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld by authorities until his immediate family has been formally notified.
The broad-daylight execution has reignited fierce public debate over escalating violent crime and targeted assassinations in Cape Town’s commercial hubs. Social media platforms were flooded with outrage, with many questioning how hitmen can seamlessly execute operations in highly secure, camera-monitored public spaces like Marine Circle without immediate apprehension.
Appeal for Information
No arrests have been made as provincial detectives scour CCTV footage from surrounding beachfront businesses and interview witnesses.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has urged anyone with information, dashcam footage, or sightings of suspicious vehicles in the Marine Circle area on Monday afternoon to contact the Table View police station or call the Crime Stop hotline on 08600 10111. All tips will be treated with the strictest confidentiality.
