
LAGOS — The Lagos State Police Command has launched an immediate investigation following a viral social media video capturing police officers violently assaulting a young gold dealer in the Mile 2 area of the state.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, August 1, 2026, sparked widespread outrage online after footage emerged showing operatives in an unmarked vehicle accosting, rough-handling, and beating the businessman as they attempted to force him into their vehicle.
According to eyewitness accounts, the victim was en route to deliver gold to a client when the armed officers intercepted him. During the ensuing scuffle, the young man sustained visible injuries. Quick-thinking bystanders intervened, rescuing the victim and preventing the officers from abducting him to an undisclosed location.
Reacting swiftly to the public outcry, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed that the errant officers have been identified as personnel attached to the Area E Command.
In a statement addressing the development, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, ordered the immediate production of the implicated officers at the Command Headquarters for thorough interrogation and disciplinary action.
The Command has also called on the victim to come forward to aid the ongoing investigation. The individual featured in the video is urged to contact the Command’s Complaint Response Unit (CRU) through their dedicated hotlines at 09111111150 or 09111111151.
