A 27-year-old bride was tragically shot to death in the early hours of Sunday as she and her husband left their wedding celebrations in Goult, a small village in southeastern France. Her 25-year-old husband and a 13-year-old child were also seriously wounded in the attack.
The couple, who had just married on Saturday and celebrated with approximately 100 guests, were leaving the venue around 4:30 a.m. local time when their car was blocked by another vehicle. Several hooded individuals emerged from the second vehicle and opened fire with what authorities believe were various types of weapons..
One of the assailants died in the attack, while the others fled on foot. Another wedding guest sustained minor injuries.
Local prosecutor Florence Galtier stated that an investigation has been launched into charges of murder committed by an organized criminal group and attempted murder as part of an organized criminal group. Autopsies are scheduled for the beginning of the week.
Didier Perello, the mayor of Goult, expressed his shock, calling the shooting “unprecedented” for the quiet village. “Twenty-four hours later, we are still in shock,” he said, adding that “it is above all anger that drives us today.”
Another fatal shooting was also reported separately in Avignon overnight into Sunday, though it is currently unclear if the two incidents are connected.
