Breakthrough Plastic Dissolves in Seawater

Tokyo, Japan – Scientists in Japan have unveiled a revolutionary new plastic that promises to tackle the global crisis of ocean pollution by dissolving completely in seawater within hours, leaving no harmful microplastic residue.

This groundbreaking material, co-developed by the University of Tokyo and the RIKEN Centre for Emergent Matter Science (CEMS), could offer a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics that persist in the environment for centuries.

Unlike many existing “biodegradable” plastics that often fail to fully break down and still contribute to microplastic contamination, this innovative “supramolecular plastic” disappears quickly and completely.

Researchers report that the material dissolves in just two to three hours in salt water, depending on its thickness and size, and similarly breaks down in soil within a little over 200 hours.

The new plastic is created by combining two ionic monomers: sodium hexametaphosphate, a common food additive, and guanidinium ion-based monomers. These molecules form a strong yet flexible bond, giving the material properties comparable to traditional petroleum-based plastics.

However, when exposed to salt, these bonds reversibly destabilize, allowing the plastic to break down into its original components.

These components are then further processed by naturally occurring bacteria, preventing the formation of microplastics that can harm marine life and enter the food chain.

Lead researcher Takuzo Aida emphasized the material’s non-toxic, non-flammable, and non-CO2-emitting properties, noting that it will not leach harmful chemicals.

The development comes at a crucial time, as the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) warns that plastic waste is projected to triple in the next 15 years, intensifying the damage microplastics inflict on ecosystems and human health.

While still in its early development phase, this novel plastic has already garnered significant interest, particularly from the packaging sector. Researchers are currently focused on optimizing coating methods for wider applications. With less than 9% of global plastic waste currently recycled, this invention offers a beacon of hope for a future with cleaner oceans and a healthier planet.
