In a recent development, a court in Sokoto has sentenced Hamdiyya Sidi to a choice between 12 strokes of the cane, two years imprisonment, or a fine of ₦50,000. The charges against her stem from her criticism of Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu in a TikTok video, for which she was accused of using “insulting or abusive language” and “inciting disturbance”.
Throughout her ordeal, Hamdiyya Sidi has been represented by Barrister Abba Hikima, who has been instrumental in her defense since the beginning. Amnesty International has condemned the charges as an attempt to suppress dissent and has called for the protection of Hamdiyya and her lawyer from ongoing threats and intimidation.
