BREAKING: Peter Obi exits ADC amid internal crisis concerns

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress, citing deepening internal conflicts and broader national challenges.

In a statement posted on Sunday via X, Obi said the decision came after a period of reflection and what he described as “silent pains” experienced while navigating Nigeria’s political landscape.

He lamented that the country’s system has grown increasingly toxic, marked by intimidation, insecurity, suspicion, and discouragement—factors he believes hinder genuine public service.

“We now live in an environment that has become increasingly toxic, where the system that should protect and create opportunities often works against the people,” he stated.

Obi also revealed he faced unfair criticism and internal pressures within political circles he had joined in pursuit of reform-driven leadership.

“Some who publicly identify with you privately distance themselves or even join in unfair criticism,” he added, noting that humility is often mistaken for weakness in Nigeria’s political space.

He clarified that his exit from the ADC was not due to personal grievances with party leaders, including David Mark and Atiku Abubakar, both of whom he said he still respects.

According to Obi, his decision was largely influenced by what he described as the infiltration of unresolved political disputes, recurring legal battles, and internal divisions within the party, which he said have shifted focus away from pressing national issues.

“I am not desperate to be President, Vice President, or Senate President. I am desperate to see a Nigeria where people can live in dignity, without hunger, fear, or displacement,” he said.

Despite his departure, Obi maintained optimism about the country’s future, insisting that effective and compassionate leadership remains achievable.

“A new Nigeria is possible,” he concluded.
