CAMETÁ, Brazil — Security footage has captured the harrowing moment an 11th-grade student launched a sudden knife attack on her mathematics teacher inside an empty classroom.
The violent episode unfolded on September 11 at Dr. Gerson dos Santos State School in Cametá, located in the northern Brazilian state of Pará. The educator, identified as Betânia de Almeida, had just finished grading the 17-year-old student’s mathematics exam when the teenager approached her desk.
Video footage from the classroom shows the minor lingering near the desk and fidgeting before abruptly pulling out a hunting knife and lunging at the teacher. Caught completely off guard, de Almeida desperately fought for her life, dodging blows and wrestling with her attacker in a chaotic struggle that nearly resulted in a facial slash.
De Almeida eventually managed to break free, bolting from the room as the student pursued her. Law enforcement officers arrived swiftly, taking the teenager into custody at the scene. According to a Pará Civil Police report, the student casually confessed that she targeted the educator simply because she disliked her.
The wounded teacher was rushed to Cametá Regional Hospital for emergency treatment. Medical evaluations, including a CT scan, confirmed that while she sustained a stab wound requiring stitches, no vital organs were damaged. She was discharged from the hospital.

Because the suspect is 17 years old, she is not legally classified as an adult under Brazilian law. Local legal expert Thays Cruz noted that the teenager will instead face juvenile infractions mirroring attempted homicide. Under the Statute of the Child and Adolescent, authorities will pursue a “socio-educational measure,” with legal experts anticipating confinement given the extreme gravity of the assault.
The Union of Public Education Workers of Pará strongly condemned the assault, issuing a statement emphasizing that “violence against education is violence against all of society”.
