Senator Gbenga Daniel has challenged the government’s reliance on GDP growth as a measure of economic progress, asking whether a young person can find decent work, a farmer can safely reach their farm, or a small business can survive the cost of power and transport, questions that cut to the heart of Nigeria’s lived economic reality.

A Challenge to the Economic Narrative

ValidViewNetwork gathered that Senator Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East, has challenged the government’s reliance on GDP growth as a measure of economic progress, arguing that the true test of Nigeria’s economic health lies in the daily experiences of its citizens.

Speaking on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at the 7th Annual Lecture of Freedom Online in Lagos, the All Progressives Congress (APC) senator said Nigeria cannot have a strong economy without security, and cannot have lasting security without a strong economy.

“Nigeria cannot have a strong economy without security, and it cannot have lasting security without a strong economy, which effectively means that both of them are inseparable,” Daniel said.

The GDP Reality

Daniel’s comments came just days after the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported that Nigeria’s GDP grew by 4.43 per cent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, up from 4.23 per cent recorded in the corresponding period of 2025.

The non-oil sector accounted for approximately 95.8 per cent of real GDP during the period.

While acknowledging what he described as “encouraging signs” in the economy, including improvements in agriculture and services, Daniel insisted that the numbers alone do not tell the full story.

“Nigeria’s economy has recorded encouraging signs, including growth of 4.43 percent in the second quarter of 2026, with agriculture and services showing improvement,” he said.

The Real Questions

The former governor posed a series of probing questions that cut to the heart of Nigeria’s economic reality:

“But the true test of economic progress is not only what appears in GDP figures. It is what Nigerians experience in their daily lives. And I ask the question: In our country today, can a young person find decent work? Can a farmer safely reach the farm? Can a manufacturer produce competitively?” “Can a small business survive the cost of power and transport? Can investors commit their resources with confidence?”

Security as Economic Infrastructure

Daniel described security not merely as a matter for the military and police, but as an essential part of economic infrastructure.

“Security is an economic issue without a doubt. It is not merely a matter for the military, the police, and other agencies. It is also an essential part of economic infrastructure,” he said.

He warned of the direct economic consequences of insecurity:

“When farmers are afraid to cultivate their land, food production will suffer. When roads are not safe, the cost of transporting goods rises” .

The Cost of Insecurity

Daniel further argued that excessive spending on security measures weakens business competitiveness, while insecurity in communities discourages both domestic and foreign investment.

He called for an approach that treats security and economic development as mutually reinforcing priorities.

This is not the first time Daniel has raised concerns about the gap between economic statistics and lived reality.

The senator has consistently argued that economic growth must translate into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

His message is clear: GDP figures are important, but they are not the whole story.

When a farmer cannot reach their farm, when a young person cannot find work, when a small business cannot survive the cost of power and transport, the economy is not working, no matter what the numbers say.

A Lesson for Nigerian Youths

Daniel’s message is a powerful reminder that the true measure of a nation’s progress is not found in spreadsheets or press releases, but in the daily lives of its people.

For young Nigerians, this means looking beyond the headlines and holding leaders accountable for the tangible changes that affect their lives.

The same politicians who boast about GDP growth while ignoring the struggles of ordinary Nigerians will never allow their own children to experience poverty or insecurity.

Their children are safely tucked away in comfortable homes or abroad, insulated from the harsh realities that millions of Nigerian youths face daily.

Do not be deceived by statistics.

Demand that your leaders deliver real change, jobs, security, and a future worth living for.

And never allow yourself to be used as a tool for someone else’s political ambition.
