Government Science, Technical and Vocational Colleges across Bayelsa State are producing self-reliant students equipped with practical skills for the modern workforce. This development was showcased during a recent visit by the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Gentle Emelah, to the Government Science and Technical College (GSTC), Swali-Yenagoa.
Students at GSTC Swali demonstrated their skills by preparing natural fruit juice and meat pie for the commissioner and accompanying government officials, highlighting the practical training they receive. Dr. Emelah praised Governor Douye Diri’s commitment to strengthening technical and vocational education, emphasizing the administration’s vision to shift focus from paper qualifications to skill acquisition.
According to the Commissioner, these colleges were established to empower students with hands-on abilities, making them self-reliant and reducing future unemployment. “We are translating the vision of His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, by placing more emphasis on vocational and technical education so our graduates will not be job seekers but job creators. I urge parents to maximize this opportunity by enrolling their children in our Science, Technical, and Vocational Colleges statewide,” Dr. Emelah stated.

The initiative is part of Bayelsa State’s broader strategy to address unemployment and drive socio-economic development by equipping the younger generation with employable trade and technical skills. Parents and guardians are encouraged to leverage these institutions to secure their children’s future and contribute to the state’s progress.
