The Bayelsa State Government has nullified the suspension of His Royal Highness Francis Timi Odudu, the paramount ruler of Ikebiri Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, describing the move by some community members as illegal and of no effect.
At a meeting in Government House, Yenagoa on Monday, Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo asserted that neither individuals nor groups have the authority to remove or suspend any government-recognized traditional ruler under the Bayelsa State Chieftaincy Law. Only the Governor, he clarified, has such powers after following due legal processes.
The Deputy Governor warned against further tension in the community, cautioning against unauthorised public statements or processions relating to the chieftaincy matter, and noted that those who do so risk confronting the state government.
To address the underlying issues that sparked the crisis, the state government has constituted a 12-member Panel of Inquiry. The panel is tasked with probing allegations against HRH Francis Timi Odudu, investigating delays in amending the Ikebiri community constitution, examining distribution of royalties, and exploring causes of repeated communal clashes.
Members of the panel include the Deputy Chief of Staff, Government House, Mr. Irorodamie Komonibo (Chairman), and high-ranking state officials such as King Bubaraye Dakolo, Chief Thompson Amule, Chief Watson Belemote, Mrs. Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, Hon. Target Segibo, High Chief Bertola Perekeme, Brig Gen. Eric Angaye, Mrs. Lear Amara Kontei, Mr. Richard Perekeme, and HRH Darius David. Mr. Ebimiebosegha Wilson will serve as secretary. The panel has been given one month to submit its findings.

The move comes amid rising tensions in Ikebiri, with reports of leadership disputes and unrest following the purported removal of the monarch. Government officials are urging community members to maintain peace as the inquiry proceeds.

The story underscores the state’s resolve to uphold legal processes in traditional leadership matters and ensure stability in Bayelsa’s rural communities.
