MADRID
Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez has hit another obstacle after Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone insisted the Argentine remains part of his plans.
Simeone’s latest comments come as Barcelona continue to explore a possible deal for the forward during the 2026 summer transfer window.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Atletico Madrid have maintained a firm position that Alvarez is not available for sale, despite continued speculation linking him with Barcelona.
The situation has placed Barcelona in a difficult position as the Catalan club searches for a new centre-forward.
Simeone makes Atletico’s position clear
Simeone was asked about Alvarez’s future during an interview concerning the growing transfer speculation.
The Atletico manager pointed to the club’s position and made clear that the decision remains with the Madrid side.
“The situation is very clear,” Simeone said, according to the report cited by Barca Universal.
He also described Alvarez as an important player for Atletico and said the club wanted to help him continue developing.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Simeone’s comments represent the latest indication that Atletico are not preparing to make negotiations with Barcelona easy. The Madrid club has repeatedly rejected the idea of selling Alvarez to Barcelona and has pointed to his €500 million release clause.
Alvarez has already made his position known
The transfer dispute intensified after Alvarez publicly indicated in June that he wanted to leave Atletico Madrid.
Following Argentina’s World Cup match against Austria on June 21, Alvarez said he had spoken with Atletico and believed a transfer would be best for everyone.
The Argentine forward also said he wanted to fulfil his dream, although he did not publicly name Barcelona as his preferred destination.
Barcelona have nevertheless remained strongly associated with the player throughout the summer. The Catalan club reportedly made a €100 million proposal for Alvarez in May, but Atletico rejected the approach and continued to insist that the player was not for sale.
August 10 could become a decisive date
Alvarez is expected to return to Atletico Madrid for pre-season training on Monday, August 10, 2026, following Argentina’s run to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Reports indicate that Atletico expect the forward to return to the club alongside other players who were involved in the tournament.
That return could become an important moment in the transfer saga. Barcelona will be watching closely to determine whether Alvarez continues pushing for a move or resumes preparations with Simeone’s squad.
Atletico, meanwhile, have shown little indication that they intend to change their position.

Barcelona face a difficult choice
Barcelona’s interest in Alvarez comes as the club continues to reshape its squad for the 2026/27 season.
However, Atletico’s position leaves the Spanish champions facing a difficult financial and sporting decision. The €500 million release clause is far beyond what Barcelona would ordinarily want to spend on the transfer, while Atletico have shown little appetite for negotiating a conventional deal.
The situation is therefore no longer simply about whether Alvarez wants Barcelona. It is also about whether Barcelona can persuade Atletico to open negotiations or whether the player himself can create a pathway out of Madrid.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Atletico’s stance remains unchanged, while Alvarez’s expected return on August 10 could provide the next major development in the saga.
For now, Simeone appears determined to keep the forward within his plans, leaving Barcelona waiting for another opening in one of the summer’s most closely watched transfer stories.
