TEHRAN/WASHINGTON — The Middle East stands at a historic crossroads today following reports that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the 86-year-old Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, has been killed in a massive joint military operation by the United States and Israel.
The strike, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, February 28, 2026, targeted the Supreme Leader’s fortified compound in downtown Tehran. Despite the confident declarations from Washington and Jerusalem, the Iranian government maintains a stance of defiant denial.

- Official Denials: Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told international media that all high-ranking officials are alive and “handling the situation.”
- The “Secure Location” Theory: Some reports suggest Khamenei may have been moved to a “secure location” just moments before the initial barrage.
However, the Supreme Leader’s failure to appear on camera more than 15 hours after the strike has fueled intense global speculation. Reports from Tehran describe scenes of both panic and celebration, with residents rushing to stock up on essentials while others reportedly took to the streets in quiet jubilation.
A Power Vacuum Looms
If confirmed, Khamenei’s death marks the end of a 37-year reign and triggers an immediate succession crisis. Under the Iranian constitution, the Assembly of Experts must choose a successor, but with several high-ranking IRGC commanders also reported killed in the strike, the path forward remains dangerously opaque.
