The Obafemi Awolowo Foundation has formally commenced the search for exceptional change-makers, declaring the nomination portal open for the 2026 edition of the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership. In a strategic expansion of its mandate, the foundation has also rolled out a brand-new tier of Sectoral Leadership Awards.
According to an official statement released over the weekend, submissions for the flagship biennial leadership prize will be accepted through October 31, 2026. Meanwhile, the window for the newly minted Sectoral Leadership Awards will close slightly earlier on September 30, 2026.
Institutionalizing Excellence and Ethical Governance
Rooted in the ideals of the late nationalist and statesman, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the awards are structured to combat contemporary governance and development crises by spotlighting individuals who embody unmatched integrity, discipline, and people-centric service.
The flagship biennial prize honors figures whose career trajectories in public service, corporate environments, or civil society have created measurable, society-wide transformations. Organizers emphasized that evaluation metrics will strictly probe candidates on character strength, visionary innovation, institution-building, and an unwavering commitment to social justice and public welfare.
New Sectoral Categories Unveiled
To capture a broader spectrum of societal impact, the newly established Sectoral Leadership Awards will recognize excellence across four targeted fields:
- Public Service
- Corporate Governance and Social Responsibility
- Educational Transformation
- People-Centred Advocacy and Support for the Underprivileged
The foundation further noted that nominations are open to candidates hailing from Nigeria, the wider African continent, and the international community at large. In line with sustainable development goals, the organization has explicitly pushed for the robust nomination of qualified female leaders, highlighting inclusive leadership as a non-negotiable asset for national progress.
Procedural Guidelines and Timelines
- Nomination Process: Submissions can be channeled through professional bodies, academic institutions, civil society organizations, traditional councils, corporate entities, and past laureates. Self-nominations remain strictly barred. All entries must be paired with concrete, verifiable documentation of the candidate’s achievements.
- Winner Announcement: The official laureate for the 2026 Leadership Prize will be unveiled to the public in December 2026.
- Main Ceremony: Formal presentation of the awards is locked in for March 6, 2027—aligning with the birth anniversary of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. The main prize winner will also deliver the traditional leadership lecture on the same day.
Interested institutions and members of the public can route completed application packages digitally or via email through the Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership Secretariat.
