The nation mourns the loss of Chief Audu Innocent Ogbeh, a remarkable patriot and one of Nigeria’s most dedicated public servants. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar joined other leaders at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja on the Night of Tributes and Service of Songs held in honour of the late elder statesman. His passing is not just a national loss but a deep personal grief for those who closely worked with him, including Atiku Abubakar who remembers Ogbeh as a brilliant mind and steadfast ally in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

Audu Ogbeh’s political journey spans decades and generations. He began his public service as a youthful legislator, elected to the Benue State House of Assembly at the age of 32 in 1979, a pioneering move that set the foundation for today’s “Not Too Young to Run” movement aimed at youth inclusion in governance. He served as one of Nigeria’s youngest ministers in the Second Republic, holding portfolios such as Communications and Steel Development and leaving lasting impacts in both sectors.

Ogbeh’s commitment extended beyond politics; he was a seasoned farmer and advocate for sustainable agriculture. From 2015 to 2019, he served as Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, where he championed policies that sought to modernize the sector, promote food sovereignty, and mechanize farming. His initiatives during this tenure were foundational in addressing Nigeria’s agricultural challenges, reflecting his passion rooted deeply in his upbringing and professional life as a farmer.

Known for his integrity, intellectualism, and pragmatic approach to governance, Ogbeh was also a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), contributing significantly to Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. His leadership as PDP chairman from 2001 to 2005 was marked by efforts to balance party dynamics and navigate complex national issues with reason and principle.
Tributes continue to pour in from across Nigeria. Former President Goodluck Jonathan extolled Ogbeh’s patriotism and humility, while current President Bola Ahmed Tinubu lamented the loss of a wise voice whose proposals were always grounded in facts and foresight. The Federal Road Safety Corps also honoured Ogbeh for his pioneering role in mobilizing citizen participation for road safety.
As a playwright and intellectual, Ogbeh’s multifaceted contributions extend beyond politics and agriculture, marking him as a unique figure in Nigeria’s development story. He leaves behind a legacy of courage, dedication, and service—a legacy that will inspire future generations and endure in the annals of Nigeria’s history.

His family, friends, and the nation at large remember him fondly as he rests after a life well-lived in service to his country. Condolences continue to flow for Mrs. Ogbeh and the entire family, with prayers for strength and comfort in this time of sorrow.
The life and work of Chief Audu Ogbeh remind us all of the power of patriotism and the enduring impact of committed public service.
