Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the recent local government election conducted in Rivers State, describing it as a serious travesty and an affront to the very essence of elective democracy. He characterized the election, held by what he termed an “occupation government,” as an absurdity executed in a shameful and shambolic manner.
Atiku accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of deliberately undermining democratic principles by conducting the election without regard for legal norms and with the sole aim of securing an unfair political advantage. He warned that this conduct signals a dangerous trajectory for Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Calling on opposition parties in Rivers State, Atiku urged them to reject the legitimacy of the election, stating that the government responsible for the poll operates outside the bounds of the law and lacks any legal or moral authority to oversee such a critical democratic process.
Expressing solidarity, Atiku sympathized with the people of Rivers State, who he said are suffering from political manipulation by a powerful cabal intent on subverting their democratic rights at all costs.
He also appealed to Nigerians, the international community, and Nigeria’s partners worldwide to take heed of what he described as the perilous path the country is headed down due to these undemocratic actions.
Atiku’s statement comes amid controversy over the election results, with the APC winning 20 of the 23 local government areas, while the incumbent PDP secured just three, a development critics say reflects political scheming rather than genuine democratic outcomes.
