AWKA, ANAMBRA—A horrifying conclusion to a major kidnapping investigation unfolded on Saturday as the Anambra State Police Command confirmed the recovery of two female decomposed bodies from the Omambala River, believed to be two of the three missing Cameroonian women abducted in the state.
The grim discovery was made on the evening of Friday, November 28, 2025, following a rigorous search operation along the waterways of the Anambra West Local Government Area. The effort was led by Police operatives from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, working in close coordination with professional river divers and local community volunteers.
The recovered remains have been tragically and positively identified by a family member as Mrs. Bognou Alice and her niece, Miss Sandra. Both bodies have since been transferred to a mortuary for detailed forensic examination and crucial investigative procedures.
Intensified Manhunt Underway
This development marks a critical, albeit devastating, turning point in the case. The police command has already made significant progress in the investigation with the earlier arrest of two suspects: Nonso Augustine Akpeh, 37, and Kingsley Akpeh, 44. The duo is currently providing vital information to investigators.
However, a third key suspect, Uchenna Nicholas Mmadu, is still at large, and the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, mnips, PhD, has issued a directive for all units to intensify operational activities aimed at his swift apprehension.
In a press statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, the Commissioner extended his profound condolences to the bereaved family and friends. He also ordered continuous, strengthened search efforts to locate and recover the remaining missing victim.
CP Orutugu reaffirmed the Command’s absolute commitment to protecting all residents and foreign nationals, ensuring justice is served in this high-profile case.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves across the state, underscoring persistent security concerns, particularly regarding kidnapping activities. Authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and provide any useful information that could assist in the ongoing investigation.
