Former Ogun State Governor and Senator Ibikunle Amosun is poised to announce his bid to reclaim the Ogun Central Senatorial District seat in the National Assembly. The event, slated for Sunday amid his birthday festivities, blends personal celebration with political ambition. Sources close to his campaign reveal extensive groundwork, including N500,000 disbursed to each ward in the district to rally supporters and guarantee a robust turnout.
Amosun, who governed Ogun from 2011 to 2019, eyes a return under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) banner, though he retains All Progressives Congress (APC) membership for now. This aligns with a joint defection plan alongside ally Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Ishola, an APC member eyeing the governorship. Their ADC switch aims to challenge incumbents in the 2027 polls, intensifying Ogun’s political landscape.
A confidant to Amosun emphasized the declaration’s dual role as thanksgiving and strategic launch. “The Senator remains committed to impactful service and representation,” the aide noted. This move revives Amosun’s senatorial legacy—he won Ogun Central decisively in 2019 with 88,110 votes—while echoing past rivalries, including his 2023 push against Governor Dapo Abiodun.
Ogun Central, spanning Abeokuta North, South, Ewekoro, Ifo, Obafemi Owode, and Odeda LGAs, forms a key Egba stronghold. Amosun’s history there, from prior Senate tenure to gubernatorial wins, bolsters his base. As electioneering accelerates ahead of 2027, this announcement underscores shifting alliances and fresh mobilization in Nigeria’s Southwest politics.
