American Man Sentenced to Life for Murder of Nigerian Boxer Isaiah Olugbemi

A Maryland court has sentenced 37-year-old Nicholas Francis Giroux of Odenton to life imprisonment plus 20 years for the 2024 murder of Nigerian-born amateur boxer Isaiah Olugbemi. Giroux pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and use of a firearm in a violent crime and was sentenced on August 26, 2025, at Anne Arundel County Circuit Court before Judge Richard Trunnell.

Olugbemi, aged 27, was a rising star in amateur boxing and a father. He had recently won the National Golden Gloves Championship in Washington, D.C., and was preparing to turn professional. On June 17, 2024, Olugbemi was shot multiple times outside his townhome on Meadowmist Way in Odenton, suffering fatal gunshot wounds.

Surveillance footage from the crime scene clearly captured Giroux approaching Olugbemi and shooting him repeatedly with a 9mm handgun until the boxer collapsed. Giroux then fired three more shots before fleeing the scene in a van. He later confessed to the killing and led investigators to the firearm used.

The incident followed a confrontation about two weeks earlier, during which Giroux displayed a handgun at a backyard cookout where Olugbemi and neighbors were playing music. Despite this prior threat, no arrest was made at that time since Giroux did not point the gun.

Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess described the murder as “cruel and senseless,” emphasizing Olugbemi’s bright future and the tragedy of his untimely death. She stated, “The callousness and lack of remorse on the part of the defendant is really disturbing. He deserves this sentence.” Leitess also extended her sympathies to the family and friends of Olugbemi, hoping the sentencing brings them some measure of justice.

During court proceedings, audio recordings revealed Giroux’s lack of remorse, with chilling remarks that suggested he felt justified in the killing. The case drew significant attention due to the racial undertones and the victim’s promising career being cut short.

The prosecution was handled by Assistant State’s Attorney Carolynn Grammas, with the Anne Arundel County Police Department’s homicide detectives leading the investigation.
