Santa Cruz, Bolivia – Relief has washed over the Bolivian Amazon as five individuals, including a child, were successfully rescued after enduring a harrowing 36-hour ordeal atop their small aircraft, which had crash-landed in an alligator-infested swamp. The dramatic rescue unfolded near the Itanomas River, bringing an end to days of uncertainty following the plane’s disappearance.
The single-engine aircraft, carrying three women, a child, and the 29-year-old pilot, Andres Velarde, experienced engine failure approximately one hour after takeoff. Forced to make an emergency landing, Velarde skillfully brought the plane down in a swampy area bordering a lagoon. However, their relative safety on the aircraft’s fuselage quickly turned into a tense standoff with the local wildlife.
According to the pilot, the stranded group found themselves surrounded by alligators, some reportedly coming within a terrifying three meters of their precarious perch. Adding to the danger, they also spotted a large anaconda in the murky waters. Miraculously, Velarde believes that leaking fuel from the downed plane may have acted as a deterrent, keeping the reptiles at a slightly safer distance.

With the swamp water deemed too dangerous to enter due to the presence of the lethal reptiles, the group was forced to remain on top of the aircraft for the entirety of their ordeal. Their sustenance during this time consisted solely of local cassava flour, a provision fortunately brought along by one of the passengers.
The desperate situation came to an end on Friday when local fishermen in the Bolivian Amazon region stumbled upon the wreckage of the small plane. The stranded individuals were swiftly airlifted to a nearby hospital via helicopter. Despite their traumatic experience, local authorities reported that all five are in “excellent condition.”
The disappearance of the aircraft had sparked widespread speculation in the region. Following the successful rescue, relieved officials expressed satisfaction that the “theories” surrounding the incident had now been put to rest. The incredible tale of survival highlights the dangers of the Amazonian wilderness and the resilience of those who navigate its unpredictable environment.
