Ọyọ is preparing for a spectacular celebration as the Alaafin Abimbọla Ọwọade Local Planning Committee releases the detailed itinerary for the installation of Ọba Abimbọla Akeem Ọwọade I, the 46th Alaafin of Ọyọ. The festivities, spanning from March 31 to April 12, 2025, promise a vibrant blend of cultural heritage and modern celebration.
Pre-Installation Extravaganza (March 31 – April 4)


The celebrations commence on Monday, March 31, with a captivating Cultural Procession and Carnival, showcasing the rich tapestry of Yoruba art, music, and dance. An inaugural ceremony, featuring cultural luminaries and state dignitaries, will follow, accompanied by exhibitions running until April 4.
A significant tree-planting initiative, symbolizing growth and continuity, will unfold in three phases starting April 1. A public discourse and symposium will engage scholars in discussions on Ọyọ’s history and future. Young minds will be enlightened through a coronation-themed quiz contest.
On April 3, the final match of the coronation football tournament will take place, followed by the commissioning of developmental projects by Prince Akeem Adeyẹmi, a member of the Federal House of Representatives, in honor of the new Alaafin.
Installation Day (April 5)
The official installation ceremony on Saturday, April 5, will be held across multiple venues in Ọyọ to accommodate the expected large gathering of government officials, traditional leaders, and international guests. The event will commemorate the traditional rites recently completed by Ọba Ọwọade, blending ancient customs with contemporary festivities. Exclusive VIP receptions and cultural showcases will also be held.
Post-Installation Thanksgiving and Initiatives (April 6 – 12)
Following the installation, a series of thanksgiving ceremonies will reflect the spiritual diversity of Ọyọ:
- April 6: Christian Thanksgiving Service at St. Michael Anglican Cathedral (11:00 AM – 1:00 PM).
- April 11: Jumat Thanksgiving Prayer at the Central Mosque, Ọja (1:30 PM).
- April 12: Traditional Thanksgiving Ceremony for Iṣẹṣe/Oriṣa Devotees at Iṣẹṣe Compound, Ọyọ (10:00 AM).
Additionally, a free eye examination and eyeglasses distribution campaign will be held on April 7, and ritual observances will take place at the Eṣu Akẹsan Shrine on April 9.
