AKURE, ONDO STATE – The long-anticipated Onyearugbulem-Irese flyover in Akure is rapidly approaching its completion, with the project now in its final stages. This was confirmed following a recent inspection by Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, signalling a significant push to deliver the vital infrastructure to the people of Ondo State.
Engr. Abiola Olawoye, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Lands and Housing, led a team of government officials to the construction site on Monday to assess the ongoing work. According to Engr. Olawoye, the final set of slabs for the bridge are currently undergoing casting on-site, a critical step towards the flyover’s imminent completion
.
The project, which was awarded in April 2023 with a 15-month duration, has been a key focus for the Aiyedatiwa administration. Governor Aiyedatiwa, who has repeatedly emphasized his commitment to completing inherited projects and improving road infrastructure across the state, had previously inspected the flyover in January 2024, when it was reported to be around 40% complete. In March 2025, during another inspection, the Governor stated the flyover was 70% complete and urged contractors to expedite work for commissioning within two months. This suggests a potential completion target around May 2025 or shortly thereafter.
Engr. Olawoye assured the public that the contractor is working diligently to meet the deadline set by the Governor, underscoring the administration’s commitment to delivering quality infrastructure on schedule. The flyover, once completed, is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity along the Ilesha-Akure-Owo expressway, a major artery within the state capital.
This project is part of a broader commitment by Governor Aiyedatiwa to re-engineer road infrastructure in Ondo State, with focus on urban renewal and enhancing accessibility for residents. The administration has also been actively engaged in other significant road projects, including the dualization of Oda Road and various rehabilitation efforts across the three senatorial districts, demonstrating a concerted effort to transform the state’s physical landscape.
