Tomeka Thiam, wife of globally renowned singer and entrepreneur Akon, has officially filed for divorce, ending a marriage that lasted nearly three decades. According to court documents obtained just days before what would have been their 29th wedding anniversary on September 15, 2025, Thiam cited “irreconcilable differences” as the cause for the separation.
The couple, who married in 1996, share a 17-year-old child. In her divorce petition, Thiam seeks joint legal custody but requests that physical custody of their child be granted solely to her. Additionally, she has petitioned the court for spousal support while explicitly stating that Akon should not be entitled to any financial support from her.
Despite Akon’s international fame, their relationship had been largely private, with Tomeka preferring to stay out of the public eye. Akon, known for his hits such as “Smack That” and his ventures beyond music including philanthropy and business projects, has previously been open about his unconventional family life, acknowledging multiple relationships and children.
