Political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections in Ogun State gathered momentum yesterday following the resignation of Hon. Donaldson Abiodun Ajayi as a Permanent Member of the Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).
Ajayi’s exit from the state board has triggered widespread speculation of an imminent defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Sources close to the political landscape indicate that he is slated to assume a strategic leadership role in the upcoming 2027 campaign organization of Senator Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello.
In an official resignation letter dated August 31, 2026, and addressed to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Ajayi confirmed that his departure took effect immediately. He attributed the decision to emerging political commitments, noting that stepping down was a principled measure to avoid conflicts of interest or divided loyalties between his official duties and evolving political obligations.
”Rather than find myself in a position where I would have to balance competing responsibilities, expectations, or political orientations, I consider it more honourable, responsible, and principled to voluntarily relinquish this appointment,” Ajayi stated in the correspondence.
Despite the apparent political undertones of his departure, Ajayi was quick to absolve the state government of any friction. He maintained that his resignation stemmed purely from his changing trajectory rather than any administrative grievances with Governor Abiodun or the leadership of SUBEB, while expressing appreciation for the opportunity to contribute to basic education development in the state.
While the resignation letter explicitly confirms his exit from the state board, it remains silent on his immediate party membership status or formal movement to the PDP. Political analysts, however, view the development as a significant chess move, positioning the Obasanjo-Bello camp for aggressive grassroots mobilization as aspirants and stakeholders continue to redraw battle lines across Ogun State.
