After four months, Police Council confirms Egbetokun as substantive IGP

The Nigeria police council has confirmed Kayode Egbetokun as the substantive inspector-general of police (IGP).

The council which is chaired by President Bola Tinubu confirmed Egbetokun during its first meeting of the new administration at the presidential villa, Abuja on Tuesday.

President Tinubu had on June 19 named the Ogun state born officer as the new IGP to replace Usman Baba who was relieved of his duty by the president.

Members of the committee include Ibrahim Geidam, minister of police affairs; national security adviser (NSA); Nuhu Ribadu, chairman of the police service commission (PSC); Solomon Arase, and Governor of Kwara, and chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

Minister of police affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, announced the confirmation of Egbetokun to state house correspondents at the end of the council meeting.

He highlighted Egbetokun’s impressive curriculum vitae and international exposure.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has set up a constitutional review committee to carry out “comprehensive” police reforms.

Governor of Bauchi, Bala Mohammed, announced the development to newsmen.

“The committee comprises the minister of police affairs, NSA, chairman of PSC, and the chairman of the NGF. They will work together with a view to make sure that the Nigeria Police is reformed.”

Also speaking, governor of Ogun, Dapo Abiodun, said the council observed that no meaningful reforms have taken place in the police since its creation in 1861.

He added that the committee would develop ideas that would lead to reforms that would characterize the new Nigeria police force.
