
In a historic gathering at the Igboburo compound in Ijebu Ode, Otunba Dr. Adekunle Hassan, a world-renowned ophthalmic surgeon and respected community leader, officially declared his intention to contest for the revered Awujale throne. The occasion drew princes, princesses, traditional chiefs, and distinguished figures from across Ijebuland, signaling a potential shift in the leadership dynamics of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House.
Dr. Hassan, the Otunba Obaruwa (Ba’mole) of Akile Ijebu, brings an unparalleled blend of professional excellence and community service to this sacred candidacy. His medical career is marked by pioneering advancements in ophthalmic surgery and education both in Nigeria and abroad. As the founder of Nigeria’s first private postgraduate ophthalmology training institute, the Eye Foundation Hospital, and the Deseret Community Vision Institute, he has trained over a hundred ophthalmologists and allied health professionals.
His academic journey and professional credentials are impressive: after early education at Ilesa Grammar School and Ijebu Muslim College, he studied medicine at the University of Lagos. He holds fellowships from prestigious institutions including the Royal College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in the United Kingdom, as well as the West African College of Surgeons.
His career spans senior consultancy roles in the UK, Saudi Arabia, and Nigeria, with a strong focus on vitreo-retina surgery, glaucoma, cataract, anterior segment, and ocular plastic surgery. Beyond his clinical achievements, Dr. Hassan has championed public-private partnerships aimed at transforming eye care delivery in Sub-Saharan Africa, reflecting his commitment to sustainable health development.
A respected voice in global ophthalmology advocacy, he holds leadership positions in international bodies such as the International Council of Ophthalmology and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness. Locally, he presides over several medical organizations and holds significant roles within Nigeria’s healthcare administration, including chairmanship of the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital Management Board.
Dr. Hassan’s deep roots in Ijebu culture and tradition are evident through his chieftaincy titles and active involvement in the Fusengbuwa Ruling House. Installed by Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the current Awujale, he is recognized as an influential custodian of Ijebu heritage.
