Ladi Adebutu, the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate for the 2023 governorship election in Ogun State, recently clarified why he believes he lost to Governor Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress.
Both candidates hail from Iperu Remo in Ikenne Local Government Area.
Adebutu attributed his defeat to his refusal to engage in violence during the election, stating that he instructed his supporters not to retaliate despite reported disruptions and attacks by political thugs in 99 polling units.
The election on March 18 witnessed significant disturbances, including the destruction of voting materials and equipment in various areas of Ogun East and Ogun Central senatorial districts.
This prompted the Independent National Electoral Commission to nullify results in affected areas. Ultimately, Governor Abiodun secured victory with 276,298 votes against Adebutu’s 262,38 votes.

Despite legal challenges filed by the PDP, including allegations of electoral irregularities and violence, Abiodun’s win was affirmed by the judiciary from the tribunal to the Supreme Court.
Adebutu emphasized his commitment to peaceful politics, citing his belief in life after death and his refusal to condone violence or desperation in political processes.
During a ceremony commemorating the 92nd anniversary of his great-grandfather’s passing in Odeda Local Government Area, Adebutu reflected on his ancestor’s legacy of community service and noted the enduring impact of goodwill.
In response, the ruling APC spokesperson dismissed Adebutu’s remarks as post-election campaigning and questioned the sincerity of his motives, referencing an ongoing trial for alleged vote-buying.
The exchange underscores the ongoing political dynamics in Ogun State following the 2023 elections, with both parties positioning themselves for future contests.
