On Monday, the Federal High Court in Abuja denied the request of Tukur Mamu, a terrorist negotiator, to be transferred to Kuje Correctional Centre.
The court cited the frequent jailbreaks at Kuje prison as the reason for rejecting Mamu’s request.
Valid View Network reports that Mamu was arrested on September 6, 2022, at Aminu Kano International Airport upon his arrival from Egypt due to his alleged involvement with terrorists responsible for the Abuja-Kaduna train attack on March 28, 2022.
On March 21, 2023, he was arraigned by the Department of State Services (DSS) on ten counts of terrorism financing and other charges, to which he pleaded not guilty.
According to Justice Inyang Ekwo, in his ruling, he emphasized the concerns over frequent jailbreaks, noting that even the Federal Government had raised alarms about the issue.

Mamu did not dispute these concerns, leading the judge to treat the government’s assertions as undisputed facts.
As a result, the court ordered Mamu to remain in DSS custody throughout his trial.
However, Justice Ekwo reaffirmed his previous order allowing Mamu access to his physician, under DSS supervision.
Mamu’s lawyer, Abdul Mohammed (SAN), alleged that the DSS had not complied with the court’s December 19, 2023, order allowing his client access to medical treatment.
Mamu claimed he had only been allowed to see a physician once, after which a comprehensive medical report was submitted to the DSS.
Since then, he had not been permitted further medical access, despite needing urgent surgical operations.
Mamu contended that his health was deteriorating and that he risked losing his life if not transferred out of DSS custody for proper medical treatment.
Despite these claims, the court maintained its decision to keep Mamu in DSS custody while ensuring he receives necessary medical care under supervision.
