NAAPE Urges NCAA to Reinstate ValueJet Pilots Amid Abuja Airport Incident

In the wake of the August 5, 2025 incident at Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja, the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) has appealed to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to rescind the suspension of Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba of ValueJet Airlines.

The suspension followed a breach of safety protocols when the pilots commenced departure procedures without completing mandatory pre-departure clearance checks, an action that endangered ground personnel and airport users, according to NCAA reports. This occurred during a fracas involving Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, popularly known as K1 or Kwam 1, who reportedly attempted to board the flight with a prohibited substance believed to be alcohol and engaged in unruly conduct on the tarmac.

NAAPE’s national president, Galadima Abednego, acknowledged a lapse in judgment on the part of the pilots but condemned the musician’s provocative and disorderly behavior, which escalated the situation. In an official statement on August 9, 2025, NAAPE called for a transparent and unbiased investigation and urged that blame and accountability be directed at Kwam 1. The statement emphasized the need for cooperation between passengers, aviation workers, and airport authorities to safeguard safety, highlighting the importance of passenger restraint during air travel.

ValueJet management confirmed the incident and their full cooperation with NCAA’s ongoing investigation. They removed the pilots from active duty pending a thorough review. Meanwhile, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) also launched an investigation into the breach of security protocols involving the musician.

Following the event, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, endorsed the suspensions and directed that Kwam 1 be placed on a no-fly list pending further investigation, signaling the gravity of the breach.

NAAPE’s stance underscores the tension between maintaining strict aviation safety standards and addressing incidents involving high-profile individuals. The association urged the aviation authorities to consider the entirety of events and urged Nigerians to support efforts aimed at fostering safer skies.
