A domestic dispute turned fatal in the early hours of Monday in Umuahia, Abia State, as a woman allegedly stabbed her husband, an officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), to death following a heated argument over infidelity and child welfare.
The deceased, identified as Chidiebere James, was attached to the Abia State Command of the NIS. The incident occurred at their residence in Umuihi, Umuogba Ekeoba, located in the Umuahia North Local Government Area.
Escalation of Violence
According to family sources, the friction began on Sunday. The couple reportedly had a confrontation regarding the medical care of their sick child and the officer’s alleged failure to provide financial support. The situation was further exacerbated when the wife reportedly discovered “incriminating” text messages on her husband’s phone, leading to accusations of infidelity.
While the intervention of the deceased’s sister and other relatives briefly calmed the situation on Sunday evening, tensions boiled over again early Monday morning.
A Fatal Confrontation
The renewed quarrel reportedly turned physical when the husband’s phone was damaged during the scuffle. In retaliation, James allegedly destroyed his wife’s phone. In the heat of the moment, the suspect reportedly grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed her husband. James collapsed shortly after the attack and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, where he was confirmed dead.
Police and Community Response
The Abia State Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, confirmed the arrest of the suspect on Tuesday. He stated that the woman is currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) facing murder charges.
The traditional ruler of the Ekeoba Ancient Kingdom, HRH Iheanyi Nwokenna (Oba The Great), expressed shock at the incident, noting he was informed of the tragedy upon his return from a trip. The community remains in a state of mourning, with many residents expressing alarm over the rising tide of domestic violence and the extreme measures taken during marital conflicts.
